Free Range Egg Production in Bacup

Reporter: Ask Rossendale
Date online: 18/04/2008

This week, councillors approved plans to build a new egg production unit at Hey Head Farm on Rochdale Road.

The building, 85 metres x 18 metres, will house free range egg laying hens, along with collection, packing facilities and feed bins.

Paul Harrison who runs the farm, said: " Everyone wants free range eggs now. The market is very strong with demand currently outstripping supply. We hope to have the unit up and running by the end of the year".

Kim Thompson, who will help run the egg unit, said: " If we have 12000 hens we could produce up to 10,000 eggs a day!"

Although there were some objections to the new unit, the plans were passed with only minor modifications.
