Improvements at Rossendale markets
Date published: 16 February 2010
A strategy to revitalise Rossendale’s Markets has proved to be a success with a 56% reduction in empty stalls and a 40% increase in the number of casual traders on the borough’s markets. Market traders have also reported an increase in the number of people visiting the markets in Bacup, Haslingden and Rawtenstall.
The success of the ‘Revitalising Rossendale Markets’ strategy comes despite the economic slow-down throughout 2009 and the continued decline of traditional markets in other parts of the country.
The strategy, which was agreed by the Council during 2009, involved making changes to some of the markets policies to increase competition and a high profile marketing and promotional campaign to attract new traders and visitors.
New trading days have been added at Bacup (Friday’s Flea Market) and Haslingden (Tuesday’s Bric-a-Brac Market) and a specialist Art Market has proved to be a success in Bacup.
Financial incentives were provided for new traders and existing stall holders were offered discounts on additional stalls.
A Stallholder of the Month scheme was established to recognise traders who are positive ambassadors for the markets and to promote the high quality goods available on the markets.
