Internet Group hopeful for new Bacup Carnival

Date published: 11 July 2008

By utilising technology, in the form of the Internet community group, Facebook, over 600 people have now signed up to support attempts to relaunch a Carnival in Bacup.

Group founder, Vickie Burnside, said: " I can't believe how much it has taken off. Everybody has been going on about it since we lost the carnival in Bacup, so I decided to start a group and see what support there was."

She has suggested holding it back in Stubbylee Park, where the carnival was traditionally held, and banning alcohol to ensure the event is family friendly. Vickie added:" We have had trike riders wanting to show their bikes, and we would like to invite Rossendale mountain bikers to attend, plus lots and lots of people to join in a procession through the streets. The town has had a bad image of late. I want the good people of Bacup to show the true community spirit."

The first step is to hold a public meeting, and the idea has the backing of local MP Janet Anderson, and local councillors.

Anyone interested can log on to Facebook and search for Bring Back Bacup Carnival or write to Vickie Burnside c/o The Community Centre Haworth Drive, Stacksteads, OL13 0SA.
