Date published: 05 August 2009

POLICE in Rossendale are urging homeowners, business, schools and churches to work with them to help combat lead theft.

Officers are warning that lead theft is still a problem with mills, schools and churches being a favourite for thieves.

Crime Prevention Officer PC Phil Buck said: “I would urge people to be aware of the problem and to report suspicious activity to police.

“There are also a few practical steps people can take to reduce the risk of being targeted by thieves.”

These include:
· Securing your site by locking gates and maintaining fencing
· Installing security lighting
· Removing the means to commit crime by moving any items away from the building that assist a climb to the leaded area
· Painting the lead with a sticky anti-theft paint
· Speaking to your community police team for advice or a site visit.
