“Do YOU Fit the Bill?” Police Ask Would-be Cadets
Date published: 07 January 2010
Youngsters from across Rossendale are once again being given the opportunity to find out for themselves what goes on behind the scenes at Lancashire Police.
Volunteer Police Cadets are being sought with successful applicants getting to experience what it would be like to examine a crime scene; what is involved in getting a defendant to court and what happens during a road traffic investigation – just to name a few things.
Cadets will also get certificates for their achievements including first aid and volunteering awards.
The scheme, now in its seventh successful year, is open to 16-19s across Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale but applications must be in before 31 January 2010.
Only 28 places are available to youths who will spend 38 weeks learning all about the police and criminal justice system, before receiving their recognised qualifications during a prestigious awards ceremony.
Volunteer Cadet Co-ordinator Ann Smith said: “The Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme is a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity for local youths. It’s a chance to find out what goes on behind the scenes at Lancashire Constabulary, to learn valuable new skills and to do something really interesting and worthwhile with all that spare time.
“As usual, we’ve already had a great deal of interest in the Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme but we’re still keen to hear from more applicants. So, if you want to do something enjoyable and worthwhile, which will enable you to grow in confidence and skill levels, then please give us a ring to find out more.”
The application process for potential Cadets is simple. Interested youngsters will first have to complete an application form, which they can collect from their local police station, or they can e-mail policecadets@lancashire.pnn.police.uk .
Successful applicants will then be invited to attend an interview following which 28 young people will then be given the opportunity to become Police Cadets.
The deadline for returning completed applications is 31st January. Training for the Cadets begins in March 2009 and will last 38 weeks.
Meetings are held every Tuesday from 7- 9pm at VEKA, Rossendale Road, Burnley, who provide sponsorship, allowing the Cadets to use their facilities.
