Council chiefs add new skills - pulling wheelie bins!

Date published: 09 January 2010

None of us need reminding how much the recent arctic conditions have disrupted every aspect of our lives - not just in Rossendale, but pretty well across the whole country. And it shows no signs of abating, with ice and more snow flurries making journeys hazardous.

One of the most worrying side effects has been the impossibility of our council waggons and workers to take our Christmas refuse and recycling materials away.

And this has not gone unnoticed in the normally ivory towers of our council offices! It was therefore very pleasing to see Helen Lockwood, Chief Executive of Rossendale Borough Council and a number of other senior managers, putting on their yellow safety jackets and getting out with the 'bin men' to help speed up the collection of the backlog of rubbish accumulated over the last  three or four weeks.

BBC News featured these actions, showing Rossendale in a favourable light for once, and credit must be given to the team of council staff who have 'rolled their sleeves up'  to help resolve a community issue that has become critical through no-ones fault.
