Council plans a ‘Big Litter Pick’
Date published: 10 March 2010
Rossendale Council will be holding a ‘Big Litter Pick’ on 18 March.
As many as 50 council staff will leave their office job behind and take to the streets to help clear litter. Many of the borough’s 36 councillors will also be joining in and around 20 staff from the Council’s parks department will also be supporting the litter pick.
Any residents who have suggestions for which parts of the borough they would like to see targeted in the litter pick should get in touch with the Operations Team on 01706 878660 or email pride@rossendalebc.gov.uk
Environment Portfolio Holder, Cllr. Peter Steen, said:
“The Big Litter Pick is a fantastic idea and has my full support. The amount of litter following the snow and ice earlier this year seems to have piled up and we need to get as many people out onto the streets to make a noticeable impact. I hope that as many council staff and councillors as possible will help out.”
It will be great to see the Council operating as one big team, with councillors and council staff rolling their sleeves up to deal with this one-off problem. Our staff have already shown that they are prepared to be flexible when they helped to tackle the backlog of refuse collection during January.”
The Council is also hoping that local people and community groups will get involved in future litter picking days. Anyone who wants to register their interest in getting involved in future events should email pride@rossendalebc.gov.uk or contact the Communities Team on 01706 252552. Future litter picking activities will be publicised on the Council’s website and in the local media,
The Council’s Communities Team will also be able to put people in touch with community organised environmental initiatives in their area. For example residents in Crawshawbooth can find out more about the plans of the Crawshawbooth Community Association’s Environment Group which is holding a meeting on 16 March at 7.30pm in Crawshawbooth Community Centre. Contact Cllr. Alison Barnes on 01706 217819 for further information.
Residents on the Hall Carr Estate in Rawtenstall can help out with a litter pick at the community day planned for 15 April.
Civic Pride in Rawtenstall also organise regular litter picking and community environmental projects. Email callyshepherd@gmail.com or c.blomerley@ntlworld.com for further details.
