Rossendale Liberal Democrats campaign for action

Date published: 31 July 2010

Rossendale Liberal Democrats are campaigning for action on the control of illegal advertising hoardings and banners in the Valley.
Leader of Rossendale Liberal Democrats Councillor Catherine Pilling said “Many areas of the Valley are being blighted by the increasing number of ad hoc advertising signs which are being displayed in violation of our planning regulations. A large number are positioned in very visible locations on the gateways to out towns resulting in visitors to Rossendale being greeted to a very tacky and gaudy first impression of our area. The Grane Road entrance to Haslingden is a very good (or bad!) example.

“The Liberal Democrats recently raised our concerns with the planning department.
I am delighted to report that the Council is planning action on this issue. We were informed that once the ownership of the relevant areas of land or buildings had been ascertained, the Council would be issuing the owners with a letter instructing them to remove the advertisements within a short timescale. If no action is forthcoming the Council would remove them.
“Rossendale Liberal Democrats have always believed that tourism should play a much bigger part in our local economy. We are blessed with fantastic landscapes, wonderful heritage and numerous local attractions. We applaud this course of action and believe that it is a small but important step in making Rossendale a place where visitors can enjoy spending their leisure time.”
