Winning posters brighten up sixth form building site

Date published: 03 August 2010

Talented students have given the building site of a Rawtenstall sixth form a makeover, after impressing the judges in a competition aimed at reducing traffic congestion.

More than 100 students designed posters sharing their ideas on safer and greener ways to travel to school. The winning designs have been put up on hoardings outside Alder Grange Community & Technology School where its new sixth form is being built.

The school teamed up with St Paul’s Constable Lee CE Primary School and local residents to launch the competition. Lancashire County Council and Ride On in Rawtenstall donated £600 worth of cycle vouchers for the competition.

County Councillor Tony Winder, who was one of the judges on the competition, said: “The response was fantastic – it was difficult picking winners because the standard of work was so high.

“It’s great to see local schools working together in partnership. It has also raised awareness for the students on how they can help to reduce congestion on the roads and make the area safer and greener.”

The four winners, Ruth Fletcher, 9 from St James the Less Primary School, Lucy Wood, 9 from St Paul’s Constable Lee, Thanya Ueng-Aroon, 16 and Solf Ullah from Alder Grange each received £100 vouchers for Ride On. The runners-up, Bilal Ahmad, 8, Radhiya Al-Jannah, 9 Megan Mcewan, 12, and Chloe Birtwistle, 12, won £50 bike vouchers for Ride On.

David Hampson, Head of School at Alder Grange, commented: “We were really impressed with how many students wanted to take part in the competition and share their ideas.

“It was a fun way of helping students raise awareness of green issues and they showed how keen they are to take an active role in looking after the environment. We are in the process of building a cycle path to make it safer for students to ride to school.”

Suzanne Howard, Headteacher at St Paul’s Constable Lee added: “This was a great initiative that actively encourages the whole community to work together.”
