Firefighters join in Pakistan Flood Relief fundraising effort

Date published: 28 August 2010

On (Wednesday 1st September, 2010), firefighters from East Lancs, headed by Firefighter Naveed Sharif, based at Nelson Fire Station, will get on their bikes and join youngsters from Children’s Units in Burnley, Colne and Neslon in a sponsored cycle ride to contribute to the Oxfam Pakistan Flood Relief Fund, https://www.oxfam.org.uk/donate/pakistan-floods/index.php

The riders will start out at Crestmoor Children’s Unit in Burnley, head for Colne Children’s Home, then to Colne Fire Station. From there they cycle to Marsden Hall Road Children’s Unit in Nelson, taking in Nelson Fire Station before heading back to Crestmoor in Burnley, stopping off at Burnley Fire Station.

Says Firefighter Sharif,

“Firefighters are used to helping people in a crisis and a tragedy on the scale of the flooding in Pakistan, with 20 million people thought to have been affected, cannot fail to move the UK public to want to help, together with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service personnel.”

“We know the flooding has taken thousands of lives, and the most vulnerable are inevitably the young and the elderly. Even when they have survived themselves, many children have been orphaned when parents and grandparents have perished.”

“Given that link with young people who have suffered as a result of the flooding, it is appropriate that children in East Lancashire are at the forefront of our fundraising effort and Children’s Units and Social Work Teams are key partners in our sponsored bike ride.”
“I urge people to donate generously to our fundraising effort and the Oxfam Pakistan Flood Relief Fund.”
