Last minute goal robs Rossendale of a deserved point

Date published: 08 November 2009

Saturday 7th November 2009 Unibond League Division One North

Curzon Ashton 1 v 0 Rossendale United
Not for the first time this season Rossendale can count their selves a little unfortunate not to have gained something out of a game in which for long periods they matched their opponents but they were denied in the last minute of normal time by substitute Andrew Lundy.

An early succession of corners led to an Ian Barker header just clearing the goal and Shaun Williams saw his great cross into the box lead to nothing. It was not however all Rossendale and Michael Norton spurned two glorious chances to put the home side in the lead.

On the stroke of half time Rossendale should perhaps have gone in a goal in front as Matt Ellis broke free of the defence but his shot was easily saves by David Carnell in the Curzon goal.

The second half continued much in the same vein as the first and debut keeper Russell Saunders saved well from Norton and not to be outdone Carnell saved well from Fran Powell’s header from Williams’s cross.

Rossendale were denied again by Carnell as he produced a tremendous double save from first Powell and then Danny Ellis following up and it looked like the game was heading for a 0-0 draw which probably would have been a fair result.

It was not to be however as Lundy put the finishing touched to the afternoon and sent Rossendale home thinking what might have been.
