Long layoff but no change to Rossie failings

Date published: 25 January 2010

Unibond League  -   Wakefield 2 -0 Rossendale United

Rossendale returned to football action after a five week pause for the weather but the old failings of lack of concentration in defence and not converting chances at the other end of the field cost them dear at Wakefield on Saturday.

As early as the fifth minute they went a goal behind when a miss hit back pass let in Wakefield’s Chris Howarth and he made no mistake from close range.

Rossendale began playing some good football and Tom Smith and Danny Ellis combined well to make several chances but they were denied firstly by an excellent saves from Zolna in the Wakefield goal and then by putting the ball wide of the post.

Rossendale did get the ball in the net but Danny Ellis effort was rather doubtfully ruled out for offside when it looked from the sidelines that he had timed his run perfectly.

Despite Rossendale having the best of the play Wakefield always looked the more likely to score and with the game deep into injury time at the end of the first half the inevitable happened when a right wing corner was met at the far post by the unmarked Roberts and his towering header into the top corner of the net gave Brocklehurst no chance.

With neither side able to add to the score line the second half was again a case of what might have been as both goalkeepers were able to cope with what was thrown at them and the game ended rather disappointingly for Rossendale.
