Warrington Town 5 v 1 Rossendale United
Date published: 03/02/2010
For the first fifty five minutes of the game Rossendale more than matched Warrington but in the space of two minutes all their hard work was undone and the game belonged to their opponents.
The game opened with Warrington on the attack and they forced a succession of corners but the Rossendale defence coped well with them and the danger was snuffed out.
That was until the eleventh minute when a long ball from defence caught Rossendale out and McCarthy got in behind the back four and his cross was bundled over the line by Warrington’s new signing Gavin Salmon. It was made more of a blow as Salmon had been pursued all season by manager John Hughes but the cost of signing the player would have stretched the budget of the club a little too far.
Rossendale then began to get a foothold in the game and some good football lead to several attempts at goal and Richard Mottram in the Warrington goal was forced to make saves from new signing Andre Williams, Jack Higgins and the returning Jack Brierley. Rossendale efforts were rewarded in the 40th minute when Higgins played in Williams and he rounded the advancing Mottram and calmly placed the ball into the empty net.
Rossendale almost took the lead deep into added time when a neat move between Higgins, Ellis and Brierley ended with Brierley forcing the keeper into a fine save as he pushed the ball over the bar. The second half started with Rossendale going forward again and a long range effort from Brierley had the keeper scrambling across his line to keep the effort out. A great move started by Harry Bockarie who fed Danny Ellis who’s cross was met at the far post by Brierley but unfortunately for Rossendale the defence recovered and his attempt was cleared away with the keeper well beaten.
With the lively Warrington wingers causing problems it was no surprise when Gahgan weaved his way through and beat Brocklehurst from close range and Rossendale who up to now had looked good value for at least a point fell apart and two minutes later Salmon added a third goal and McCarthy and Evans rounded off the night for Warrington and left Rossendale looking, and feeling, dejected and thinking of what might have been.
