Salford City 0 v 2 Rossendale United

With a much changed line up from 2009 Rossendale recorded their first win of 2010 with a impressive 2-0 victory at Salford on Saturday and with a little more calmness in front of goal could have easily made the score line four or five nil which would have been a truer reflection of the game.

Salford displayed their intentions from the whistle with a series of fouls and from one of these Tom Clarkson’s free kick was met by Jack Higgins but his effort was just over the bar. Not to be denied Rossendale took the lead in the twenty first minute when Tom Smith latched onto a through ball and his shot went through the legs of the advancing Scott Tynan in the Salford goal. Rossendale however did not have it all their own way and Rhodri Giggs broke clear but was sufficiently harried by Clarkson to ensure his effort went way over the bar.

The second half began with Salford all out for the equaliser and Brocklehurst parried a thirty yard effort and reacted first to smother the ball and the chance was gone. With Smith on one flank and Ellis on the other Rossendale were creating chances and it was only a matter of time before they scored again and the goal came in the seventy first minute when Smiths in swinging corner hit the post and Ellis reacted quickly to put the rebound in the net and gave Rossendale a well deserved two goal lead.

The Dale had several chances to put the game well out of Salford’s reach the best of which were two one on ones between Ellis and Tynan in the Salford goal but unfortunately for Rossendale Tynan was equal to the occasion and cleared the damger. For the last ten minutes Salford piled on the pressure but the Rossendale defence held firm and finished up good value for the three points.
