Rossendale United 1 v 2 Woodley Sports

Rossendale’s recent mini revival came to a shuddering halt within seven minutes of the start of the game last Saturday against Woodley Sports, a side without an away league win all season. The Dale were, for the first time this season, able to field an unchanged side but unfortunately produced a performance unrecognisable from the one which saw off local rivals Clitheroe last week. After only four minutes a free kick conceded on the edge of their box saw Antoni Sarsevic curl a shot over the wall and into the top corner of the goal giving Tom Brocklehurst no chance at all. Things went worse three minutes later when Sarsevic strolled through virtually the whole length of the field unchallenged and calmly stroked the ball into the net and Rossendale were in deep trouble as they struggled to get a foot hold in the game. In time added on at the end of the first half Rossendale were thrown what could and perhaps should have been a life line when Gary Gee was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence and left the visitors down to ten men. It looked, for a short while, that Rossendale were going to produce a fight back when Ryan Zico-Black broke the Woodley offside trap and his cross fell to Keith Edge who side footed the ball home. A further second booking then saw Woodley reduced to nine men as this time full back Tom Blackler was sent off and it looked like Rossendale had been given another chance but they failed to capitalise on the opportunity and Woodley held on without too much discomfort.
