Rossendale United 0 v 2 Harrogate Railway

Rossendale reserved one of their most abject performances of the season for what most people would regard as a must win game if they were to stand any chance at all of avoiding a relegation situation in just over a weeks time. The first chance of the match came with a free kick to Harrogate and Tom Brocklehurst in the Rossendale goal made the first of a string of saves which kept the score line down to a respectable level when he pushed the ball wide of his near post.

Not for the first time this season the game hinged on a hotly disputed penalty decision when the assistant appeared to convince the referee of a foul in the box and from the resulting spot kick Ben Jones put Harrogate into the lead. Rossendale’s best efforts came from a series of corners but they failed to trouble James Mann in the visitors’ goal from any of them.

The game was over as a contest four minutes into the second half when the ball broke loose in the Rossendale goal area and Dan Buttle following up was the first to react and he forced the ball home from close range. A double substitution brought on Matt Walsh and Jason Hart but even this failed to put any spark into the match and the game petered out into yet another defeat for Rossendale at Dark Lane.
