School’s golfing duo is Lancashire’s best
YOUNG golfers from Fearns Community Sports College put in a par-fect performance proving they are a cut above the rest.
Year eight student Martyn Taylor and Jordan Young, from year nine, took part in the Lancashire Schools’ Golf Association contest at Darwen Golf Club for the first time and won the team trophy.
They also performed pretty well in the individual contest with Martyn being placed joint second and Jordan joint third.
Novice golfer 12-year-old Martyn only took up the sport less than a year ago as his grandparents and uncle work at Rossendale Golf Club where Jordan and his dad Tim are also members.
Martyn said: “I was spending a lot of time at the golf course so I decided I may as well have a go. I now play a couple of rounds every day.
“I didn’t expect to win, as I was new to the course, but it was fair easy.”
He was pleased with his success but said he was embarrassed when headteacher at the Fearns Moss school Mark Smallwood presented him, and his team-mate Jordan, with their trophy in assembly.
Jordan, 13, admits he lives golf, leaving school every night and heading to a course or a driving range to put in four hours of practise.
He said: “When I finish my studies at Fearns, I am hoping to get a place at Myerscough College. I want to be a professional golfer.
“This was the first time I have played in the schools’ competition and I am delighted with how well we did representing Fearns.
“There were around 60 other children there from different schools all over Lancashire.
“When I am not playing golf, I caddy for my dad when he enters competitions on a Saturday.”
And Jordan is even planning to take in some golf courses across the pond when he heads to America in the summer for a holiday.
“I am golf mad,” he confessed. “It is a fantastic sport, it keeps me out of trouble and walking round the courses keeps me fit.”
