Mossley 4 v 1 Rossendale United

Rossendale’s season came to a predictable end with a 4-1 defeat at in form Mossley in what was a typical end of term game with neither side having anything to play for except pride. The afternoon started on the wrong foot with several players unavailable for a host of reasons and coach Andy Gayle was press ganged into taking his place in attack after Shaun Williams was hurt during the pre match warm up. Rossendale fell behind in the 31st minute when an attempt to guide the ball back to the keeper fell short and Matt Kay nipped in to give Brocklehurst no chance of recovering the situation. Things went further awry when just before half time a long ball in behind the Dale defence left Ben Richardson in the clear and cut in from the right and although Brocklehurst got his hand to his was unable to prevent the ball from trickling over the line.

Rossendale started the second half on the attack and within two minutes pulled a goal back when a neat passing move between David Owens and Tom Smith led to Owens finding the net with a crisp finish. Owens and Smith then had chances to add to the score but the nearest they came when a over zealous linesman flagged Smith offside as he put the ball in the net. Shaun Williams, who had to come on as a substitute despite being less than fit, then hit the bar with a thumping 30 yard effort but that was as good as it got as two late goals Kay and McDonagh finished the job off for Mossley.
