St John with St Michael Primary School, Shawforth - Newsletter

Date published: 26 February 2010

Welcome back to everyone after the half-term break, we hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday. We have got a very busy term ahead of us with lots of things going on!

This terms theme in school is Reverence and Respect.

We have just had a lovely certificate of thanks from the Samaritans Purse, whom we sent 44 filled shoe boxes to at Christmas for children in poor countries. The children at our school enjoyed doing this and Mrs. Dempsey, nursery teacher, has been sending these boxes for quite a number of years.

Valentines party: Thank you to everyone who joined The Friends for the Valentines Party. We had lots of fun and raised £140!

Easter raffle: The dinner staff are holding their famous Easter Raffle, there are lots of prizes to be won. Tickets are 20p each and are available at morning snack time and dinnertime. The winning tickets will be drawn on Thursday 1 April.

Parents evening: It is parents evening on Thursday 25 February. If you would like an appointment to see your child’s teacher then please see Mrs. Walsh in the school office.
Book swap: The next book swap is on Friday 26 February. It will then be every 2 weeks on a Friday. We are encouraging children to read more by swapping books they have already read from home with books that other children have brought in for the swap. It has been very successful so far.

Cookery club: The first cookery club is on Wednesday 24 February, please don’t forget it is £1.00 per session (£6 in total). Mrs. Entwistle has sent out the letters to the children who are in the first group. Please do not worry if you haven’t been chosen this time – there is a waiting list and we are hoping that everyone will eventually get a chance to be in cookery club.

Puffin book club: These catalogues went out before half term, if you wish to send an order in they must be back in school with payment before Friday 26 February. School receives free books when more books are ordered. Thank you.

Cake sale: Class 4 will be selling cakes that they have made on Friday 26 February. The money they raise will go to “The Friends”. Please send your child in with small change such as 10p or 20p to buy a yummy cake.

Reading quest: KS2- (Class 3 and 4) This will begin the week of 1st March, children will be given a Reading Quest card and must read a total of 6 books to achieve a prize and certificate.

World book day celebrations: It is World Book day on Thursday 4th March. Please come to school dressed as your favourite book character and donate 50p – this money will be used to purchase books for our school library. The Lancashire library service will be in on that morning to present an assembly. We will also be sending information out from Whitworth library as to how to become a member.

Rhema theater group: The theatre group will be coming into school to do a story about Easter on Friday 5 March.

Eco-council jumble sale: The Eco-Council will be holding a Jumble Sale in the school hall on Thursday 4th March. It will be from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and tea and coffee will also be served from the school kitchen. If you have any jumble that you wish to donate to our stall it would be greatly appreciated (books/toys/clothes/bric-a-brac etc)

Sports relief 2010: We will be having a “sports” themed week from Monday 15 – Friday 19 March. On Tuesday 16 March we will be asking your child to come to school in a t-shirt that is the colour of their house points team. Throughout the day there will be different sports related things for your child to take part in, and overall prizes on offer. In the afternoon the Nursery children will be doing a welly walk and the juniors will be running a mile in Shawforth, (so please ensure on this day that your child has the appropriate morning and afternoon clothes.) On Friday 19 March we will be having a non-uniform day – Sports Wear! Please donate 50p which we will send to Sports relief.
