Rawtenstall school helps bright sparks shine
A group of students from one of the area’s leading secondary schools have proved that Rossendale’s Got Talent!
Eight students from Alder Grange Community and Technology School were selected to take part in a regional event, delivered by North West Gifted and Talented. The Rawtenstall school hosted the Maths and Literacy activity day, which was attended by more than 90 pupils from primary and secondary schools across the region.
Jo Griffiths, Deputy Head at Alder Grange School, said: “The workshop was a great opportunity for exceptionally able students to shine. All the students involved gave up their Saturday to take part in the event.
“The Gifted and Talented scheme encourages the students to interact with people from other schools in Rossendale and also across the North West.
“Our school is delighted to be involved and act as a platform for such a great initiative. We host two of the workshops a year, each time focusing on different subjects so students get a chance to develop their strengths. Last summer we hosted a ‘Talent Factor’ workshop for Art, Music and drama students, and this latest workshop focused on students who excel at Maths and Literacy.”
Students from Fearns HS, Whitworth HS, St James the Less Primary, Constable Lee Primary and St Mary’s Primary also took part in the event.
The scheme is aimed at students in Years 5-8 who have the ability to develop to a level significantly ahead of their year group, or the potential to develop those abilities. Skills like leadership, decision-making and organisation are also taken into account when identifying and providing for gifted and talented children.
