Fearns pupils clock up the miles for charity

STUDENTS and staff at Fearns Community Sports College were certainly ‘mile ready’ as they donned fancy dress to complete the Sport Relief Mile.

They took time out of lessons to run a marked course around the school grounds at Fearns Moss, Stacksteads, and the surrounding neighbourhood and helped to raise more than a thousand pounds for the BBC charity.

Organiser PE teacher Simon Mayoh said: “In every lesson period we had groups of students doing the Sport Relief mile around the school grounds.

“They all had to pay £1 to the charity and they also had sponsorship forms with the chance of winning top sporting prizes including a Manchester United autographed shirt and a Manchester City signed football.

“On a lunchtime the students could also pay to use the gym facilities in school and all of the money raised went to the charity.

“Fearns students made a massive effort and really worked hard clocking up the miles and raised a fantastic sum for a very worthy cause.”
Headteacher Mark Smallwood completed a total of five miles, running the course with each of the school’s year groups.

Cameron Holder, 13, said: “I have already raised £50 and I still have more sponsor money to collect. The run was really good and it was flat, apart from Park Road. I am asthmatic which was a bit hard for me but I enjoyed doing it.”

Twelve-year-old Chloe Wright said: “It went well, until I fell but I think I was only left a bit shocked. I did like doing the run and I think it is a good charity to support.”

The money raised through Sport Relief is used to help vulnerable people both in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.
