SPORTING students from Fearns Community Sports College had their hard work rewarded at a special awards evening.

More than 150 of the Stacksteads school’s pupils enjoyed a meal served to them by their sports coaches in the dining room.

Head of specialism Jane Leigh said: “We changed the format this year so it was not just a celebration of sporting achievements, but also a recognition of the dedication shown by students who constantly turn up for coaching sessions and participate in all sports.

“We also had special sports pins made for all the students to recognise the work that they have done and their commitment to sport at Fearns. These were presented on the night and can be worn on the lapel of the school blazer.

“We showed DVDs that had been taken showing the pupils’ sporting successes and each coach gave an overview of the season.

“Coaches from girls’ and boys’ football, girls’ and boys’ cricket, table tennis, cheerleading, trampolining, badminton, athletics and sports leaders all presented awards to the players of the year.”

Staff and students got the chance to vote for the Contribution to Sport Award, which was presented to Hannah Skinner, from year eight, by head of the Fearns Moss school Mark Smallwood

Miss Leigh said: “Football, cricket, athletics, cross country, trampolining, netball and cheerleading… Hannah is extremely talented but also attends practices regularly to improve her skills.

“She is not only good practically but has a really good knowledge of the sports she plays, picking up rules quickly and helping her team with tactics.”
