Sporting student heads to Capital
SIXTH former Joel Duncan is London bound after being awarded a grant to attend a prestigious lecture in sports science.
The 17-year-old from Haslingden High School secured £500 funding from Rossendale Rotary Club to cover the expenses for himself and head of PE Wes Haworth to travel to the Faraday Lecture.
He was selected for the trip after he was proposed for a five-day sports leadership course in the Lake District.
The year 12 student said: “I will be attending the Royal Institution on 22 June for the Excitement of Science Day. I am really pleased to have been awarded this grant because the lecture will be very interesting and educational – it will also look good on my CV.
“I am planning to read sports science at Loughborough and I hope to become a biomechanic in sport or a physiotherapist and help rehabilitate people with sporting injuries.” Professor Tim Cable, Director of Sport and Exercise Science at John Moores University, Liverpool, will deliver the lecture.
