Rawtenstall schools team up in safer travel bid

A competition aimed at residents and students in Rawtenstall could help to reduce traffic congestion in one of the valley’s busiest areas.

Alder Grange Community & Technology School and St Paul’s Constable Lee CE Primary School have teamed up to launch a competition encouraging safer and greener ways to travel to school.
The Rawtenstall schools are asking local residents and students to design a poster promoting better ways to travel. Lancashire County Council and RideOn in Rawtenstall have donated £600 worth of cycle vouchers for the competition. The winning designs will be displayed around the schools.
County Councillor Tony Winder fully supports the initiative. He commented: “It’s great to see the schools working together in partnership. It will benefit not only the children themselves, but will hopefully reduce congestion on the roads and help to make the area safer and greener."

David Hampson, Head of School at Alder Grange, said: “Traffic and congestion is an issue at peak school times and the competition is a fun way of helping our students raise awareness of it. We are in the process of building a cycle path to make it safer for students to ride to school.”

Suzanne Howard, Headteacher at St Paul’s Constable Lee added: “This is a great initiative that actively encourages the whole community to work together.”

There are three categories in the competition: under 11, 11-16 and 16 and over. To enter simply drop your A4 poster design with your suggested ways to travel to school, at the reception of Alder Grange or St Paul’s Constable Lee. The closing date for entries is Wednesday 30th June.
