Rossendale’s new Mini-Mayor

Rossendale has a new Mini Mayor, Charlie Bishop age 9 from St Paul Constablee School, Rawtenstall.

Charlie was chosen by Cllr. Trevor Unsworth, Mayor of Rossendale, Cllr. Joyce Thorne and Elaine Craven Civic Services Officer.

More than 60 Year 4 children, from seven primary schools in Rossendale, put themselves forward to be Mini Mayor.

Each was asked to write about why they would like to be Rossendale’s Mini Mayor and what they would do.

As well as being chosen to be Mini Mayor, Charlie receive a £75 Argos Voucher as a prize.

The runners‑up were Lucas Blanchard, Jessica Sutcliffe and Suhayma Rahman all from Broadway County Primary School. Each runner up will be presented with a £25 Argos voucher. Charlie’s school, St Paul Constablee School, Rawtenstall will also receive a prize.

The Mini Mayor will accompany the Mayor on official engagements and help to encourage young people to take an interest in local democracy.

Mayor of Rossendale, Cllr. Trevor Unsworth said: “We had a lot of entries for Mini Mayor and the students came up with some really excellent ideas. Our three previous Mini Mayors did a wonderful job and we thank them for helping us in promoting local democracy to young people in the borough. We hope that our new Mini Mayor will enjoy his year of office”.
