REWARDING excellence, perseverance and contribution to school was high on the agenda as pupils were treated to their own ‘Oscars’ night.
For the second year, Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads, hired the Royal Court Theatre, in Rochdale Road, Bacup, where accolades were handed out to 130 pupils, watched by their parents, teachers and governors on Tuesday, 13 July.
Deputy headteacher Nigel Dawson explained: “Each subject nominated a pupil for progress and achievement and we also had eight special awards for pupils who have really made a fantastic contribution while they have been at Fearns.
“These awards are about the whole pupil; it is not just about academic achievement, it is about what these students have given back to school.”
Special awards were given to Year 7 Chloe Lang and Sophie Tattersall; Year 8 Matthew Moore and William Lammiman; Year 9 Sam Rodgers, Natasha Lees, Becky Fagg and Jordan Houlker; Year 10 Matthew Harding and Beth Surkitt. “These award winners have been a credit to the school throughout the year, showing an excellent attitude towards their studies, their peers and teachers,” said Mr Dawson, who takes over as head in September.
“We have decided to make this an annual event because it was so successful last year. We have awards each half term but this is different.
“These are pupils who we feel deserve something extra special for achievement, for progress, for commitment and for progress. They are valued pupils at this school and they should be very proud of themselves.”
