Conservatives take control of Council
Date published: 02/05/2008
Following yesterdays Local Council elections, the big winner in Rossendale is the Conservative Party, who won 3 seats from Labour and took control of the Council, which had previous been a hung council.
The Liberal Democrats had a net gain of 1 seat also, leaving Labour as the big losers on the day.
In the new Council, the Conservatives have 21 seats, Labour have 11, the Liberal Democrats 3 and there is 1 Independent.
The newly elected councillors are:
Cribden Janet Graham (Conservative)
Eden Darryl Mark Smith (Conservative)
Facit & Shawforth Lynda Iris Barnes (Conservative)
Goodshaw Dorothy Farrington (Labour)
Greenfield Gladys Sandiford (Conservative)
Greensclough Judith Mary Driver (Conservative)
Hareholme Nicola Lynn May (Conservative)
Helmshore Peter Evans (Conservative)
Irwell Hazel May Steen (Conservative)
Longholme Jason Michael Gledhill (Conservative)
Whitewell Tim Nuttall (Liberal Democrat)
Jim Pilling (Liberal Democrat)
Worsley David Stansfield (Conservative)

I may be wrong, but I think the Tories only won two seats (Hareholme & Irwell) from Labour as one of their 'gains' was from previous Tory leader Duncan Ruddick who had become an Independent on Rossendale Council(despite staying as Tory on the County Council) and did not fight his seat. Hence it was a Tory 'hold'. However, Labour did lose three seats as Lib Dems won one from them in Whitewell!
