Rossendale Rural Fair and Mela

Date published: 27/06/2008

The weather forecast was for severe gales in the North, and so it proved. It was impossible to erect the gazebos and stalls, so everyone was found space in the four marquees. Unfortunately the huge inflatable slide and maze had to be abandoned – definitely not safe – but the rest of the day continued with everyone entering into the spirit of making the day a success.

Rossendale talent was well represented on the main stage by Bob Morgan’s Western Reunion, Pixy Led and ICE. Local DJ Saiful Islam kept the music rolling between sets and compere Sophia Mahmood kept us all up-to-date with what was happening. The dog demonstrations organised by Dave East proved popular taking place as they did in the central arena.

Braving the dreadful weather conditions were Lorenzo and Mrs. E – they didn’t attempt the parachute game as they could well have disappeared way up into the sky!

Annapurna – Indian dancers, ended their performance by inviting the audience up on stage to join in the stick dance while Xs Base – vocals and dhol drummer, Sharlean, the Arabian Dancers and A.G. Dolla added their contribution to the mix.

Meanwhile, the group of cheerleaders/dancers performed to a packed audience in the Rugby Club. Beatsnheat’s drumming circle workshop was busy all day and Dhamak strolled around the site giving their distinctive dhol drum performances.

A lot of community organisations had supported the event with stalls, displays and exhibitions and they were all snuggled up together in the marquees with the face painters and henna hand painters, etc.

Janet Clunie ,Programme Coordinator , said:  "It was good to see such positive support for this annual community event but disappointing that “flaming June” did not live up to its reputation!! ".

Community website, Ask Rossendale, were not only promoting their excellent website, but raised £51 for charity Grassroots, helping orphans in Mbeya, Tanzania. Iain and Margaret Wight want to thank everyone who played "Find the Egg!" and confirm that every penny goes to help a needy child (not on admin!).
