Safety and fun for children as Library opens doors

Date published: 28/06/2008

Whitworth Library opened its doors to the village community on Saturday - the first such day since the Queens birthday 2 years ago. Chief Librarian, Val Spencer, said. " The event started as Child Safety Week, but we added more for the whole community, to provide a service for local people." The weather wasn't great, and numbers were disappointing, but the steady stream of visitors had a great time and made it a successful day.

The Open Day, organised by Whitworth Library in partnership with Rossendale Volunteer Network, and supported by organisations such as Bright Books of Shawclough, and Rossendale Groundwork Trust, put on a variety of stalls and activities, with something for adults and children alike.

The event was supported by Bacup Fire Station, who sent a fire appliance along to accompany the message of being safe in the home. The Fire Service is offering Home Fire Safety Checks (FREE) if you call 0800 169 1125.

Tea and biscuits were available - no charge - but donations invited, and a free raffle took place. There were displays and promotions every where in the library which looked bright, colourful and interesting ( unlike when I was younger - Ed).

One of the visitors said. "We've had a great time - its friendly, helpful and we've found out things going on for the children in the area."
