Mayor of Whitworth
The Mayor of Whitworth, Jim Mellor, together with Susan, his Mayoress have spoken about their gratefulness for the support of Whitworth people, for all he was trying to achieve during his year as Mayor.
He spoke sympathetically about the continuing need to support the work of Springhill Hospice, which is largely run from donations from ordinary folk in Rochdale and district.
He also wants to encourage the work of a variety of organisations working with young people in the valley, from the Youth Section of Whitworth Vale and Healey Band, to Whitworth Juniors Football and the like.
He has already achieved one aim for this year, which is to restart the Sports Council in Whitworth, with targets for changing rooms at Leavengreave, and to maybe develop land at Barlow Bottoms, together with Rossendale Tourism and Leisure, for both sporting and other events.
The next aim is to increase the contact between Whitworth and Kandel - twin town - particularly between young people, through the schools, using the internet and emails to build new relationships and secure town-twinning for future generations.
