Bury African Outreach

About us

Bury African Outreach (BAO) was established in 1992 when members of the Bury community got together to see how they could tackle poverty in East Africa. In the past 18 years, BAO has supported over 20 grass roots projects in Uganda and Kenya.

The inspiration came when a British nurse visited Uganda. Betsy Keating was so impressed with the local determination and zest to be self-sufficient, that she felt inspired to be part of this. Betsy encouraged her friends to join her in sending medical, educational and craft equipment to Uganda. Within a decade £35,000 of equipment was sent mainly from Bury (Lancashire) in the UK. The charity now focuses mainly on helping vulnerable children.
